Prevention and Management of Aggression and Violence Course – Blended Learning

The aim of this Prevention and Management of Aggression and Violence (PMAV) Course is to provide learners with the knowledge, skills and attitude to be able to manage aggression and violence. This course provides staff members with the knowledge, confidence and skill in recognising the early indicators, assessing and de-escalating aggressive behaviour encountered within the context of their role.

 

Who Should Attend

All individuals working in a Challenging Role. This course is based on the HSE’s Policy on the Prevention and Management of Work-Related Aggression & Violence 2018, their Strategy for Managing Work-related Aggression and Violence within the Irish Health Service 2008 and the Mental Health Commission’s Code of Practice on the use of Physical Restraint.

 

Course Delivery

We have adopted a blended learning approach to PMAV training consisting of two parts:

  1. Part 1 - Theory Module: PMAV E-learning Theory Module. This module is a statutory requirement and is mandatory for all learners. This is a pre-requisite to attend the practical demonstration.
  2. Part 2Practical Demonstration: Classroom based delivery of Physical Interventions and breakaway techniques. The Practical training session must be completed within the next 6 weeks of completion of the Theory module.

 

Practical Training Location

The classroom based Practical Demonstration (Part 2) will be conducted in our training suite at the address below.

Assessment

The course comprises of theory and practical. It is tailored to suit the industry of the trainees. The theoretical knowledge will be assessed online as part of the e-learning. The Practical assessment will take place in the class room. The learner must complete the E- learning Theory Module (Part 1) prior to attending the Practical Demonstration (Part 2). The Part 2 must be completed within the next 6 weeks of completion of the Part 1.

Course Content: Part 1 - Theory Module

  • Theory of violence and aggression in the workplace
  • What violence and aggression in the workplace is
  • Understanding and managing conflict within healthcare
  • Ethical & Legal requirements associated with violence and aggression
  • Strategies to avoid occurrences of aggression and violence
  • Identification, assessment and resolution of conflict
  • Recognition, assessment and management of escalating situations.
  • Assault cycle
  • Recognition and assessment of the escalation process
  • Use of stage specific de-escalation skills
  • Service user and situation specific risk assessment and management.
  • Verbal de-escalation skills
  • Management of verbal aggression
  • Crisis management
  • Physical and psychological risks involved in physical interventions
  • Safe practice in lone working and working alone
  • Personal safety in providing physical care
  • Risks associated with the use of physical interventions

 

Duration of Part 1

The online theory module is self-paced learning to be completed prior to Practical Demonstration. This will take approximately 2.5 hours to complete.

 

Course Content: Part 2 - Practical Demonstration

  • Physical Interventions and breakaway techniques.
  • Defence against Kicks, Slaps & Punches.
  • Breakaways: Wrist/Arm Release, Two Hand Wrist Release, Release from Clothing
    Hold (Push/Pull), Clothing Release from hold from behind, Release from Hair Hold,
    Breakaway from hold to shoulders or neck, Body hold, Biting, Breakaway from Hair
    Hold & Ligature.

 

Duration of Part 2

The classroom based practical training will take approximately 1.5 hours to complete.

IMPORTANT 

Before booking this course, please ensure you have sufficient time to complete the mandatory E-Learning Theory module. This prerequisite (Part 1) must be finished ahead of your Practical Demonstration. Kindly note that you will not be permitted to attend the practical session without completing this prerequisite.

Refresher Course

The learners must undergo refresher training every two years.

No Refund will be provided if cancelling or  “No-Show” on the course or a failure to complete the course.

 

Attendance Policy:

Late comers will NOT be permitted. Swapping a candidate for another is NOT permitted.

 

Rescheduling Policy:
